I did a shoot out with this Mono version and the recently posted Rhino 45rpm from b0ggl0r. Even tho my 48 year old ears are used to stereo, in this case the Mono original pressing is superior. Instruments have more definition and it sounds closer to a 'live' session than the Rhino in my opinion.

The stereo mix is not very good in the first place and the Rhino makes the mistake of offering a flat transfer of those tapes (at least I assume it does). I have a stereo pressing that uses the original tube cut for side B and a late '60s solid state cut for side A and both sound much better than the Rhino 45 rpm. I hope to be able to post soon, but I want to re-rip it with my new gear.

nnneeeeeeewwwwww!!!!!!
Holy Mother of God.

Why doesn't this have 127 comments?!?

Thank you so much. Never heard a mono pressing of this. And a first issue!

I picked this up last March, I paid $.49 for it. Half a dollar! It is a real first pressing! The store had obviously just acquired someone's collection, but this is more of a hip-hop and rap clientele store, the employees were too lazy to check it out, so they just put it out on the floor in three stacks marked as $.49 each! I was one of the first one to pick over the lot, I got a few other nice pieces that day too, but this was the big one.
Hope you like.
@crispi, where do you find such detail on the pressings?

hi 86ed... what a nice find for fifty cents. amazing!!! no chance finding something like this over here in europe.

my comment on the rhino about using a flat transfer is based on my listening and comparing to the first CD pressing (which sounds similar). also, I don't assume that Rhino made the tapes sound WORSE when pressing it, so it must be flat. my pressing sounds completely different, at least side B: fat bass, much more three-dimensional in stereo presentation, a different EQ altogether. it is what this mix seems to need and the way it was originally issued. I hope someone will post an original stereo pressing someday.

I got my info about my pressing my posting a question on the SHTV forums.

listening to your rip, I really like this mono mix. there supposedly is (or will be) a Japanese CD of this out there, as there is of the mono mix of My Favourite Things.

I'm enjoying this rip for the last two days, so thank you very much.
I'm getting a strange skip in track 6) Syeeda's Song Flute at 0:22. Can anyone confirm please? I see that this particular second is a little shorter than normal so it looks like a corrupted file, not vinyl damage or bad rip.
@86ed, could you please provide md5 sums for the files? At least for track 6. Anyone can do it really.

Thanks in advance

also in track 8, at 6:38

Thank you 86ed! I LOVE Tommy Flanagan, but am always amused at how flummoxed he sounds trying to cope with the Giant Steps changes for the first time.
crispi said…
yes, the skip is there. missing a few miliseconds of music. may be in need of a re-rip, it's probably a digital flaw (the recording software skipped a beat). thanks for pointing out, mertin.

Can't say I agree about the 45RPM edition, I think it sounds incredible. Best I've heard, and I've got several vinyl editions - the Kevin Gray cut, the Heavyweight Champion edition, and several CD versions. But to be clear, the 45RPM I'm talking about was cut by Bernie Grundman... yours should be the same, but it's possible that Europeans got a different cut (see for example the "Rumours" 45RPM debacle.)
I do agree that the mix isn't the best, but that Grundman cut sounds real sweet to these ears.

Wait, so have the skips been fixed yet? Just wondering (I can't check right now because it hasn't finished downloading on my end).
86ed said…
Yes, the skips are repaired. Unfortunately there is a tagging error / omission, but the music is fixed. You can fix the tags.
harmonkardon said…
Thanks for replying, 86ed! I finished downloading a couple hours ago and have listened to the affected segments. No skips to be heard here!

I wouldn't worry about the tags, you can say I'm kind of a master of fixing tags myself
